WHY CONSUMER · BRAND-CUSTOMER COVENANT

WHY BRANDS REALLY DECLINE

It is not a law of nature that brands have to decline due to time or market size. They decline because they betray what made customers love them. The source of the betrayal is almost always structural — outside impatient capital, fund clocks, time pressure, a disconnect from origin. The brand is forced to chase scale faster than its nature allows. The product quality is gutted. The customer feels it. The customer leaves. The brand dies.

The brands that compound indefinitely — Apple (1976), LVMH (1987), Dyson (1989), Levi Strauss (1853), Coca-Cola (1886), John Deere (1837) — are the ones that structurally were allowed to stay what they are. No fund clock. No professional financial engineering and accounting tricks. They reached scale over time and built a culture that could sustain it. That scale turns out to be enormous.

NATURAL LIMITS

Some consumer brands may reach a natural limit. Pacific Spirit may grow exponentially to $20M and hit an inflection point, with slower S-curve growth thereafter. In that case it is a magnificent cash engine. Some may compound for thirty years into something far larger. The discipline is to know which is which and not force the answer.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR WELLS CAPITAL

I don't make this argument romantically, but economically. Wells Capital's structure — perpetual capital, operator-led, evergreen structure — is designed to let the great brands run, forever. Wells Capital's assets are intended to be protected from the structural forces that cause decline elsewhere. These principles are so important to me because they make the upside case possible.

I have done venture. The median outcome is a zero, baked into a model built on buying lottery tickets for the big one. I do not do zeros anymore. On the other side I've been in the boardroom listening to the justifications to cut quality and growth for short-term profit. It's a zero-sum mindset. I want to build something that lasts.

The consumer always finds out. Keep brands true to their core and rewards will follow.
