WHAT WELLS CAPITAL ACQUIRES
THE ACQUISITION FILTER
Wells Capital aims to buy undermanaged brands with high quality products loved by customers, full of latent demand, in sizeable markets. And then scale them with the ambition of a startup and the discipline of a brand 10x its size.
There are a few filters I've developed that signal a brand may be ready to be transformed into a long-term growth machine.
LATENT GREATNESS
Something genuinely special hidden in the nuance — composition, heritage, supply chain, a passionate niche, the founder's attention to detail. Pacific Spirit's Belgian manufacturer has supplied the Royal House since 1926. The Amazon listing does not say that. Bring that quality to the world.
BRAND LITMUS
A real brand has category permission — the right to introduce something new and have customers welcome it. Patagonia can start selling Patagonia Provisions alongside its apparel. If cross-category would be impossible, that's a collection of SKUs, not a brand. It is a price, a keyword, an algorithmic position, arbitrage — not a brand.
SURPRISE PERFORMANCE
If the brand is doing surprisingly well given how poorly it is being run, the underlying product is doing the work. Easier to fix the marketing on a great product than to make great marketing deliver on a mediocre one.
We live in a world today where the best way to build wealth is to make something lots of people value — a lot. For much of humanity, the world was zero-sum; the lords and conquerers of old made their wealth via pillage, conquest, and tax-taking.
I find this both remarkable and inspiring. Let's be proud of making great products and the rewards that follow.
